A city separated in two, the IJ river has always divided Amsterdam North from the South. With the South flourishing as the heart of the city, the North has been long relegated to the role of industrial area. But as the city has expanded the demand for residential living space has increased, and the previously bustling industry as moved abroad. Amsterdam North has become a prime candidate for redevelopment, and Apto Architects is proud to be a part of that.

Masterplan Klaprozen buurt
mixed materplan for abandoned industrial site

Over 2,000 homes will be added in the location Klaprozenbuurt. Apto developed a masterplan with a mix of apartments from social housing to upmarket apartments. For starters, couples, families and the elderly. This concerns 40 percent social rental housing, 40 percent medium-priced owner-occupied and rental homes and 20 percent private sector housing.
Surrounding greenery is often an afterthought in most major developments these days. But Apto has prioritised the inclusion of two internal courtyards, which will form the core of the neighbourhood. The yards flow into a larger adjacent park, forming a scenic pathway for residents to explore the new developing area.
After all, we are pioneering place makers mixing local added value with tomorrow’s challenges into identities, systems and new spatial forms.
