The office as a creative living studio

For Schiphol Area Development Company, Apto created a hybrid working environment in The Base. The SADC Studio serves as a creative living room for stand-up sessions, brainstorming, meetings, podcasts, or simply coming together over a cup of coffee. It blends naturally into the SADC team’s workspace, combining warm, natural materials with a horizontal zoning plan, demonstrating a modern approach to flexible and collaborative office design.

Coulisse effect The design, inspired by the layered Coulisse Effect, divides the long space into dynamic zones that support a range of employee activities: group work, focused solo tasks, in-person meetings, or calls.

Tailor-made to meet needs and ambitions

After a careful process of understanding the client’s needs and ambitions, Apto presented SADC with a fully tailor-made concept. From the start, it was a priority to actively involve all SADC team members in the design, ensuring the space meets the needs of every employee. Feedback was collected through in-depth online questionnaires, followed by in-person interviews and conversations.

At the spatial design level, we reused 80% of the existing furniture.
3D printed ''Olifantgras'' table We created an iconic table from Olifantsgras at the entrance of Schiphol Area Development Company to showcase their innovative spirit. This circular building material is locally grown beneath the landing zones of Schiphol Airport and, under the right pressure, can be 3D printed or compressed into a surface. The uniquely shaped table is the largest element 3D printed using Olifantsgras. Our colleague Rodrigo used Grasshopper to design the table and prepare the 3D model for the printing machinery.

''One of the biggest learnings is that when it comes to innovation, it is essential to give enough room for testing and prototyping''.
