Our interior and architectural design for Teijin Aramid creates a connection between users and space, as well as between history and the future. By integrating the history of the former chemical industrial park with Teijin’s identity, we developed a new-generation workplace that energises its users. Teijin Aramid is one of the main tenants at the Chemical Campus of Arnhem, located next to Akzo Nobel, Rijnijssel College, and several smaller companies. This new work environment transforms an old lab space next to Teijin’s production facility into a modern and functional office.

Blending history and future

The massive low volume with red brickwork references the pre-war Enka factory, which drove the industrial growth of the area. In contrast, the high volume emphasises light and transparency, while its grid reflects the architectural style used in the surrounding terrain around the 1950s. The grid has been carefully adapted to align with the interior’s functionality and the diverse needs of its users.

The rhythm of the façade is carefully designed to complement the historic surrounding buildings while also creating a modern appearance.

The reuse of the existing shell, combined with the creation of a functional office grid, required smart solutions for the façade. By developing several standard façade modules that fit both grids, a dynamic exterior was achieved. In addition, the variety of vertical lines seamlessly connects the façade to the interior, creating a modern appearance without visible repetition, while remaining cost-effective.

A hybrid workplace

The new work environment at Teijin encourages knowledge sharing and collaboration, while also providing employees with their own space to focus. All floors have different layouts, yet the same design principles apply. At the core of each floor, a vibrant central area facilitates vertical circulation and informal meetings, as well as coffee breaks. Surrounding this core, a flexible membrane offers various options for video calls, focused work, small “train booth” meetings, and larger meeting spaces. The membrane is bordered by workstations with both open and enclosed characters, located in the areas with the most daylight.

On the first floor, the central meeting centre is directly connected to the restaurant, which is equipped for all-day meetings or individual work. At the ground floor, the experience centre and welcome area showcase the impact of Teijin Aramid products on businesses, society, and people. The stairs leading to the first floor are fabricated from Teijin Aramid fibers, and in close collaboration with Holland Composites, we designed them to appear as if they are floating.
